BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT & RESTRICTIVE PRACTICE IMPLEMENTATION

Evidence-based, person-centred strategies that build skills and improve quality of life.

Positive Behaviour Support
When a participant's behaviour support plan includes a regulated restrictive practice, implementing it safely and correctly is a genuine responsibility — one that requires specific registration, individual training on each participant's own plan, and close collaboration with the specialist practitioner who developed it.

What is Restrictive Practice Implementation?

Under the NDIS Practice Standards, a provider that uses regulated restrictive practices when delivering support — seclusion, chemical, mechanical, physical or environmental restraint — must be registered under Module 2A (Implementing Behaviour Support Plans). This is different from developing a behaviour support plan itself, which is a separate, specialist function (Module 2). Amaze Abilities is registered to implement behaviour support plans, working from plans developed by qualified behaviour support practitioners.
Implementation involves:
  • Training every support worker in the exact, documented strategies of each participant's individual behaviour support plan
  • Prioritising proactive strategies aimed at reducing the situations that lead to crisis in the first place
  • Using any authorised restrictive practice only exactly as documented, and only as a genuine last resort
  • Properly documenting and reporting any use, in line with state and Commission requirements
  • Working continuously toward reducing — and where possible eliminating — the need for restrictive practices over time

Who is this support for?

Supports participants who have a behaviour support plan in place, developed by a specialist behaviour support practitioner.

For participants who need a support team properly trained and registered to implement that plan safely and consistently.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between developing and implementing a behaviour support plan?
Developing a plan (Module 2) is done by a specialist behaviour support practitioner who assesses behaviour and writes the plan. Implementing it (Module 2A) is carried out by the provider and support workers delivering day-to-day support, trained in that specific plan's strategies.
Does Amaze Abilities write behaviour support plans?
No — we implement plans developed by qualified behaviour support practitioners, and work closely with them to make sure implementation matches the plan exactly.
What happens if a restrictive practice hasn't been authorised yet?
Any use of a restrictive practice must be authorised through the relevant state or territory process and documented in a Behaviour Support Plan. We work within these requirements and support the authorisation and review process alongside the practitioner and family.
How do you make sure restrictive practices are only used correctly?
Every support worker is trained specifically on the individual participant's plan by the practitioner who developed it, with clear escalation and reporting processes for any use of a restrictive practice.
Is the goal to keep using restrictive practices, or to reduce them?
Reduce them. NDIS requirements — and our own approach — focus on minimising and, where possible, eliminating the need for restrictive practices over time through proactive strategies, not maintaining reliance on them.
Who reports the use of a restrictive practice?
Reporting obligations depend on your state or territory and the specifics of the authorisation. We manage this as part of our registered obligations and keep your behaviour support practitioner and family informed.
