HIGH INTENSITY SUPPORT

Skilled, trained support for complex or clinical care needs, delivered safely and with dignity.

NDIS High Intensity Support
Some daily support involves genuine clinical risk — tracheostomy care, complex bowel care, enteral feeding, wound management. These are High Intensity Daily Personal Activities (HIDPAs), and they demand support workers who are individually trained and assessed as competent, not just experienced in general disability support.

Delivering care that matters

Delivering these supports safely requires more than general disability support experience. Under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission's requirements, every support worker must be individually assessed as competent in each specific high intensity task by an appropriately qualified health practitioner, working from the participant's own care plan — not a generic certificate applied broadly. At Amaze Abilities we have a Registered Nurse on site to provide training and ongoing education to our support workers. This ensures the care you are receiving is of the highest quality specific to your needs.

Who High Intensity Support is For

High intensity support suits participants managing complex health needs alongside their disability — including people returning home after hospital discharge with ongoing clinical care requirements, and participants whose daily support genuinely requires trained, competency-assessed care rather than general assistance. Families and hospital discharge teams often engage this support specifically to enable a safe, well-supported transition home.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a support worker qualified to deliver High Intensity Support?
They must be individually assessed as competent in each specific high intensity task by an appropriately qualified health practitioner, trained against the participant's own care plan and equipment — not a general disability support qualification alone.
Does High Intensity Support need to be delivered by a nurse?
Not always — it's not a requirement that these supports are delivered by a nurse or allied health practitioner, but workers must be trained and assessed as competent, and clinical oversight is built into how the support is delivered and reviewed.
Can High Intensity Support help with a hospital discharge?
Yes — this is one of the most common reasons families and discharge teams engage High Intensity Support, to ensure a safe, properly resourced transition home.
How is High Intensity Support funded in my NDIS plan?
It's funded as a distinct category reflecting the additional training and clinical complexity involved, and is generally assessed based on the number and complexity of the high intensity tasks a participant needs support with.
What happens if my needs change over time?
Your support plan and worker competencies are reviewed and updated as your clinical needs change, in consultation with your treating health professionals.
Does Amaze Abilities work with my existing medical or nursing team?
Yes — we coordinate closely with treating health professionals, nurses and your support coordinator, where involved, so your high intensity support is genuinely joined up with your broader care.
